Honoring the brave hearts at TAFE

In the past few days, against the backdrop of the #ChennaiFloods, social media has been rife with stories of loss, of courage and of compassion. Numerous instances have been stated where ordinary citizens have risen to do extraordinary acts.

At TAFE we had such ‘Heroes’ amongst us, people who took upon themselves the task of helping those who needed it the most. These were acts of compassion from one human being to another, acts of ‘Individual Social Responsibility’ and TAFE in a small ceremony at its Head Office honored these employees who acted with great courage and are an inspiration to many, making this city a better place to live.

#TAFE also put together a care package for all those employees who were affected by the flood which was packed with all the basic necessities that a family would need to begin the process of rebuilding. It is a promise that TAFE takes care of every member of its family.

Attended by TAFE Chairman and CEO, Ms. Mallika Srinivasan, members of the senior management and employees from across TAFE’s #Chennai locations, it truly was an inspiring initiative.

Free falling 123 feet above Chennai

On a hot Saturday afternoon, the first ever “Festival of Speed” was organized in India by Bajaj Pulsar at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) in Irrungattukotai. True to its name, 36 of the best riders from across the country were brought in to race. The bike of choice was the Pulsar RS200.

It was an ambitious title to live up to and the festival did not disappoint. The visitors were treated to, an awe inspiring performance of bike stunts by India’s best stunt team – Ghost Riders, a concert by Benny Dayal, who fused beats from Northern and Southern India for a lively mashup and adrenaline junkies got an opportunity to try something rarely seen in this part of the country, Bungee Jumping!

The Bungee Jumping – Falling freely platform was setup at a whooping 123 feet above ground, giving the participant a birds-eye view of the area and riders racing on the track. Mohit Thakur, part of the PD&E team from TAFE R&D, took this opportunity to register for the jump. His excitement engulfed his initial nervousness when the bucket was raised to its maximum height with the help of a crane.

At maximum height with a breath taking view of the sky, the ground and the tiny bikes racing across the track, Mohit felt a sense of calm. And when the moment came he raised his hands, and took the leap. The ground rushing towards him, falling head first with nothing to hold onto, it was a moment he would cherish for long; his first free fall. It was half way through the fall that he felt the chord grip and he regained his composure as he bounced a couple of times before it ended.

An adrenaline fuelled moment, a memory for life; a small leap of courage, a big jump in Mohit’s happiness.

Honoring the brave hearts at TAFE

Chennai, India!  A sought after business destination across the world. Home to thousands of migrants across the country. Business hub of Tamil Nadu – Automobiles, IT, Education.Culture capital of the south.Tropical humid weather, hot, hotter and hottest summers. But after this recent deluge, world over we have been hashtagged, #Chennai Floods. A new name for a phenomenon that hasn’t occurred in the last 100 years.

The incessant and heavy downpour coupled with the flooding of its water bodies transformed a city bustling with people and traffic to mere islands of despair. Some streets turned into watery graves and people have just about managed to survive the wrath of these floods.

Social media emerged as the hero. It brought the entire city together. Binding us with empathy and deeper emotions of forgotten brotherhood. Recently in a blog a lady rescued by some volunteers, wrote, I am glad that my young children are witnessing the rescue and relief efforts around the city, where everyone is reaching out to the other, opening their homes and hearts, for if anything happens in the future, they will know how to help people when the situation demands.

And there were good Samaritans, young and old, who went about doing all the good they could, to people around them. They played a great role in the rescue and relief efforts in the city. Some of them set up command centers to help people connect with their families and others directed resources and volunteers to locations where they were needed the most. Some worked with local communities and some on their own.

At TAFE we had such ‘Heroes’ amongst us, people who took upon themselves the task of, feeding, clothing, transporting, rescuing, sheltering or to simply put it, helping those who needed it the most. It didn’t matter whether they were people who they had known; all that mattered was that someone needed assistance and it was provided without any questions asked. It wasn’t an action premeditated or expecting a return, it was an act of compassion from one human being to another. It was an act of Individual Social Responsibility and TAFE in a small ceremony at its Head Office honored these employees who acted with great courage and are an inspiration to many, making this city a better place to live.

TAFE’s values have been unchanged by time and dynamic business landscapes. And that is not just a statement. At TAFE, CSR has never been just a buzz word, it has been deep rooted, an intrinsic part of its value system. In addition to honoring the ‘Heroes’, TAFE also put together a care package for all those employees who were affected by the flood. Packed with all the basic necessities that a family would need, it is a promise that TAFE takes care of every member of its family.

And in an endeavor to help in the rehabilitation of the society on a whole, TAFE Chairman and CEO, Ms. Mallika Srinivasan met with the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and presented a cheque for INR 3 crores towards the Chief Ministers Flood Relief Fund. It will also be conducting medical camps in the flood affected areas in an effort to curb the possibilities of diseases that arise in the aftermath of such a calamity. It is a strong affirmation of TAFE’s pledge to serve the community and society and nurture and protect the environment. It reaffirms that everyone at TAFE is driven by values, at work or outside. All in the quest to, Cultivate the world!

Celebrating the life of a visionary Mr A Sivasailam

Behind every success there is a force that drives it; TAFE owes its legacy to its people – Leaders who paved the way through the years and those who form TAFE. On August 24, 2015 we celebrate the life of one such leader who embedded quality into TAFE’s DNA and sculpting it into a values driven company, with the farmer at the heart of its strategy – TAFE’s Former Chairman, Mr. A. Sivasailam. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, the TAFE family came together to celebrate this visionary, pioneer, philanthropist and the people’s man. Connected digitally via webcast, all TAFE locations were able to join in the celebrations at the corporate office before having individual celebrations of their own.

The event was attended by TAFE Chairman and CEO, Ms. Mallika Srinivasan and members of the senior management. They spoke fondly of Mr. Sivasailam and remembered him for his vision, courage, foresight and bringing about the culture where quality became one of the foremost attributes TAFE as a brand aspired for. The celebrations concluded with floral tributes by everyone present.

A multitude of adjectives can be used to describe Mr. Sivasailam but one need not look beyond TAFE, a testament to the impact his vision has had on people’s lives. He was TAFE’s growth architect who enriched lives of many and empowered the dreams of farmers across the world. Mr. Sivasailam is a presence always guiding and leading us.
